Canadian Armed Forces Military Personnel Instruction 09/06 – Compulsory Retirement Ages for the Supplementary Reserve, Cadet Instructors Cadre and the Canadian Rangers

2. Definitions

Compulsory Retirement Age (CRA) (Âge de retraite obligatoire (ARO))

CRA is the age beyond which a member of the CAF may not serve, unless an extension to CRA is authorized. Those authorities are found in QR&O art. 15.17 (5) (officers) and art. 15.31 (7) (NCMs). (Defence Terminology Bank record number #399).

3. Purpose

3.1 This instruction sets out the Compulsory Retirement Ages (CRAs) for members of the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC), the Supplementary Reserve (Supp Res), and the Canadian Rangers (Cdn Rangers). It also amends the documents noted above.

4. General

4.1 The Chief of Defence Staff, in accordance with QR&O 15.17(4) (officers) and QR&O 15.31(6) (NCMs), may authorize the CRA for members of the Reserve Force. Consequent to CDS approval, at Armed Forces Council 21 March 2006, this instruction provides the CRA administrative requirements for the CIC, the Supp Res, and the Cdn Rangers.

Sub-Component CRA Notes
CIC 65 years There is no change from the previous CRA of 65 years.
Supp Res 60 years This reduces the previous CRA of 65 years.
Cdn Rangers No CRA Aboriginal and local traditions will determine the end date of service.

5. Administration

5.1 The effective date for the amended CRA for the Supp Res and Cdn Rangers is 1 July 2006.

5.2 All members enrolled in or transferred to the Supp Res or Cdn Rangers on or after 1 July 2006 will be subject to the CRA noted in paragraph 3 above. All members serving in the Supp Res or Cdn Rangers on 30 June 2006 will retain the CRA in effect on that date.
