Grapplers take over Edmonton Fitness Centre
October 12, 2022 - Tim Bryant, Western Sentinel
The action was mostly on the floor at the Edmonton Garrison Fitness Centre in the first week of October.
The centre played host to the Canada West regional grapping development camp and tournament, drawing in nearly 60 competitors, coaches and other personnel to learn new skills and put those skills to the test. Competitors came from across Western Canada and the Territories.
The tournament itself took place on Oct. 5, with the development camp running from Oct. 3 to 4. The development camp covered basic techniques and featured light sparring from specific starting positions.

During the tournament, the competitors were split into two weight classes. The smaller of the classes ran a round‑robin event where each athlete competed against the others in the class. The larger weight class ran a double‑elimination bracket, where the competitors had to lose twice before they were knocked out of the event.
In previous years, the regional event would be used to pick the team to represent Canada West at the national grappling tournament. However, at the moment a national event has not been scheduled, explained Brigade grapping co‑ordinator Corporal Liam Burns.
