Yesterday in Toronto, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, held a productive bilateral meeting with the Minister of Finance of Chile, Mario Marcel.

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Finance Minister discussed opportunities for Canada and Chile to work more closely together and create good-paying jobs in both countries by providing our allies with the critical minerals that the global clean economy depends on. The Deputy Prime Minister and the Finance Minister spoke about the numerous Canadian mining companies operating in Chile, and emphasized the importance of projects in both countries that are undertaken in a sustainable way, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted Canada’s ongoing work to build our clean economy, which includes Canada’s $3.8 billion Critical Minerals Strategy and the new Clean Technology Manufacturing Tax Credit, which will support the extraction, processing, and recycling of critical minerals essential to clean technology supply chains.

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Finance Minister also discussed the importance of the strong, diverse, and growing commercial relationship between Canada and Chile. Canada is the largest source of foreign direct investment in Chile, and bilateral merchandise trade has nearly quadrupled since the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement came into force in 1997.
