Archived - Ministers of Finance and Health Issue Joint Statement after Meeting with Provincial-Territorial Counterparts

December 19, 2016 – Ottawa, Ontario – Department of Finance Canada

Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Health Minister Jane Philpott today issued the following statement at the close of their meeting with provincial and territorial counterparts:

"The Government of Canada is committed to working cooperatively with provincial and territorial governments to make new investments to improve health outcomes for Canadians, and to supporting health system transformation in a way that respects the responsibilities and contributions of each government.

"Today, the Government of Canada offered a funding agreement that included $11.5 billion in investments to address key priorities of mental health and home care.

"These investments would address specific gaps in our health care system, such as improving home care and addressing the over 500,000 Canadians under the age of 25 who are not getting the mental health care they need and deserve.

"The offer that the federal government put on the table has the potential to be transformative and make a difference in the lives of Canadians.

"We are open to working with each interested province and territory to deliver on these important investments in mental health and home care.

"As federal, provincial and territorial governments, we all share the same goal: improving our health care system for all Canadians. The Government of Canada is a critical partner in this discussion, and we will continue to work openly with our provincial and territorial partners towards making health care in Canada more responsive to the needs and expectations of Canadians."
