Archived - Minister Morneau Hosts Second Meeting of the Advisory Council on Economic Growth
August 24, 2016 – Toronto, Ontario – Department of Finance Canada
The Government of Canada is committed to an economic agenda that puts people first, and is based on the notion that when you have an economy that works for the middle class, you have a country that works for everyone.
The Minister of Finance’s Advisory Council on Economic Growth has been tasked with generating bold and innovative ideas that will lead to a higher standard of living for the middle class, and those working hard to join it. Their advice will contribute to the Government of Canada’s Growth Strategy, which will better position Canada in the global economy of tomorrow, while taking on the challenges posed by an aging population as Canada seeks to achieve sustainable, long-term growth.
Following the Council’s inaugural meeting in May, Advisory Council members have taken steps to advance this important work through research and analysis, as well as discussions with experts from across Canada.
Today’s meeting is the second formal gathering hosted by Minister Morneau, and will be attended by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. Over the coming months, the Advisory Council will continue its work on the four primary areas that have the highest potential for generating economic opportunity:
- Capital investment and infrastructure;
- Innovation;
- Talent and labour markets; and
- Competitive markets, including trade and investment.
This fall, as part of the Department of Finance Canada’s pre-budget consultations, Canadians from coast to coast to coast will be invited to submit their thoughts and contribute to the Growth Strategy through various means, including digital tools, social media and formal consultations that will seek their views on the long-term economic vision for Canada.
