Finance Minister Bill Morneau today expressed his support for the nomination of Christine Lagarde to a second term as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), following the conclusion of the nomination process:
“Ms. Lagarde has demonstrated strong and effective leadership throughout her tenure as the IMF’s Managing Director, and is exceptionally well qualified for this important position.
“She has helped implement historic reforms at the IMF and has guided the organization through challenging economic times.
“I believe her proven leadership will continue to serve all IMF countries well as we all work together on pursuing policies that create inclusive growth globally.
“I look forward to working with the IMF to effectively support its membership through high quality analysis and advice, technical assistance, and lending.”
- The IMF plays a central role in promoting global economic and financial stability.
- Canada is a member country and one of the largest shareholders at the IMF.
- The Minister of Finance represents Canada on the IMF’s Board of Governors.
- On January 21, 2016, the Secretary of the IMF opened the period in which nominations could be made for the position of Managing Director. The nomination period closed at 11:59 p.m., Eastern Time, on February 10, 2016.
