CSC in Afghanistan

The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) contributed to Canada's Engagement in Afghanistan through:

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA)

From 2003 to 2010, CSC sent senior correctional advisors to Kabul, Afghanistan through UNAMA. They helped support the Government of Afghanistan in its efforts to develop a national correctional system that respects international standards for the treatment of prisoners.

Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (KPRT)

A team of CSC officers was annually deployed to the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kandahar from 2007 to 2011. These correctional experts worked directly with front-line Afghan correctional staff and administrators. They helped to improve security and the general living conditions and operations of the prison facilities in Kandahar Province, specifically at Sarpoza Prison. Through mentoring, training, and advising local correctional staff at Sarpoza, CSC helped the Kandahari community maintain a more secure environment that promotes law and order. With the help of international partners, Kandahar corrections officials have improved their capacity to manage their institutions, supervise offenders in line with international standards, and build professional correctional services that support their community.

In 2012-2013, a CSC senior correctional advisor was deployed to Afghanistan to provide guidance to senior management of the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Centres (GDPDC). The advisor worked closely with the Canadian Embassy and international partners to help administer a national correctional system and mentored senior Afghan officials on international best practices and standards. Funding for these projects was provided through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development's Global Peace and Security Fund.
