Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: June 24, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

Did you know that nearly 10 million people speak French in Canada? Today, we mark Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day and the Fête nationale du Québec. I join proud Francophones across the country in appreciation of our language and traditions.

On Thursday, June 27, we will be celebrating Canadian Multiculturalism Day. I strongly believe that cultural diversity enriches us in so many ways. It is important for all of us to find meaningful ways to appreciate our language and cultural background. It is rewarding to be curious and keen to learn about languages and culture different from your own. Check with your case management team about what learning programs or activities may be available to help you.

June 27 is also PTSD Awareness Day, a time to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

PTSD can result from traumatic events and can deeply affect mental health. I encourage you to use this day to break the stigma surrounding PTSD. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength. There are lots of resources available or you can speak with someone in Health Services or to other supports available, such as chaplains, Elders and volunteers. Many staff, peers, advisory members, volunteers, and organizations are there to support you.

“The pain of trauma can be the catalyst for personal growth, leading us to discover inner strength and resilience we never knew we possessed.” – Dr. Lewis Herman
