Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: June 10, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

CSC offers many innovative programs to help you on your healing journey. One of these programs is the Art Therapy Program in the Structured Intervention Unit (SIU) at Stony Mountain Institution.

Art therapy is a unique approach to help participants express themselves creatively. In 2023, 16 offenders took part in the program and indicated helped them develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments.

I encourage you to speak with your case management team about what programs or activities may be available to you at your institution.

The Power of Art as Therapy

This month marks the beginning of Pride Season, which we recognize from June to September.

Pride Season is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate 2SLGBTQI+ people. More importantly, it serves as a reminder to all of us that there is no place for discrimination of any kind in our institutions or communities.

“What does art do for us? It gives shape to our emotions.”
― Muriel Barbery
