Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: March 25, 2024

On March 11 and 12, staff from the Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ARDEI) Directorate at CSC visited Collins Bay and Bath institutions. They met with:

  • staff members
  • management, as well as
  • ethnocultural inmates

The meeting was a good opportunity to listen to inmates and hear their perspectives on CSC's Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. These discussions complement other consultations conducted in other regions of the country over the past year.

The ARDEI team would like to thank the Black Inmates and Friends Association chairs and members, as well as the ethnocultural inmate representatives at Bath and Collins Bay Institutions for their openness and their rich contributions during our discussions.

A reminder to those in Ontario that we are looking for your feedback on the Black Social History pilot project. Paper-based questionnaires have been distributed in institutions and parole offices across Ontario. I encourage those of you who self-identify as Black to complete it.

This is an important piece of CSC’s Black Offender Strategy and supports our Anti-Racism Framework. I invite you to participate. Your feedback is important to help us, as we hope to expand the project to institutions in other regions.

This Friday is Good Friday and the start of the Easter weekend. This is an important weekend for Christians. I encourage you to find time to connect with your family and loved ones over the weekend.

Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Respect is earned, not given. -  Hussein Nishah
