Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: March 18, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

I would like to wish a happy and peaceful Ramadan to all Muslims observing this sacred month. Ramadan is a time of:

  • fasting
  • prayer, and
  • charitable giving

This month, families and friends will gather to devote themselves to their faith.

This is also a time to remember the many contributions Muslims have made to our communities. To all celebrating, Ramadan Mubarak.

I hope you are taking advantage of the different creative programs available to you. Art Therapy is a good initiative that offers sessions with an art therapist. The therapist works with clients who have experienced trauma. The sessions help offenders, including those in the Structured Interventions Unit (SIU), to build empathy and understanding. They contribute to the individual’s healing and recovery from their past traumas. At Stony Mountain Institution, the works that are completed as part of the art therapy initiative are included in a portfolio. This goes towards a fine art course credit towards a high school diploma equivalency.

During the month of March, we celebrate Social Worker month. Social workers have an important role within our health services teams. They help with resources that can contribute to your personal growth and rehabilitation. They are advocates for your:

  • health
  • community connections, and
  • reintegration

Remember, your social worker is here to help navigate the complexities of life and to assist in laying the groundwork for a better future. Don't hesitate to reach out and make the most of the support they offer.

Finally, March is also Pharmacy Appreciation Month. The Pharmacy team works hard every day to make sure you are getting the appropriate medications and equipment to keep you healthy. Please take a moment to thank them for the work they do, either directly or via an institutional healthcare team member.

Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: It must be produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all. - William Faulkner
