Commissioner's update for offenders and their families:
November 27, 2023

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

This Sunday, December 3, is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The day promotes the understanding of disability issues.

It encourages all of us to recognize the essential dignity, rights, and well-being of people with visible and invisible disabilities. It is a reminder that everyone deserves understanding and should be treated with respect for who they are.

As November closes, it is important to mention the impacts of Movember. Movember is a global organization that raises awareness of men's health issues. The Canadian Families and Corrections Network receives funding from the Movember Foundation to offer the Dad HERO program to incarcerated men in seven of CSC’s institutions. HERO stands for “Helping Everyone Realize Opportunities.”

The program helps dads learn about bonding with their children, how to improve communication skills, and how to co-parent, which helps with reintegration.

I encourage those of you who are fathers to check out the Dad HERO program, if you are interested.
