Commissioner's update for correctional employees:
November 29, 2023

This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.

The mental health and well-being of employees are of paramount importance to me. I know that maintaining safe and healthy workplaces is critical to our well-being. I am committed to fostering an organization free from bullying, harassment, and violence. An organization that empowers respect and tolerance is a healthy one, and every one of us plays a role in this.

Today, I am pleased to share with you the 2020–2023 Report on Workplace Climate and Employee Well-Being in the Correctional Service of Canada. This is an important organizational tool that will help us assess the current wellness climate, identify existing gaps, and set priorities that will guide our work for the coming year.

In the three years since the last publication of our workplace climate report (2019–2020), CSC staff, volunteers, and contractors have faced uniquely challenging circumstances with the pandemic. However, our strength and perseverance have helped carry us through these times of uncertainty and change. I am proud of how employees, like you, rose to the occasion in the face of these challenges. The resilience you demonstrated allowed us to continue to effectively deliver on our mission, mandate, and organizational priorities.

I am pleased that this edition of the Workplace Climate and Employee Well-Being Report demonstrates the progress we have made as an organization. It provides a detailed look at the effectiveness of the many programs and services available to employees. I encourage you to read the report and reflect on the priorities it lays out. This report will continue to advance honest and meaningful dialogue about mental health and wellness at CSC. Above all else, this edition of the workplace climate report will help us take stock of the present wellness landscape. It should also be considered a roadmap to guide our future work as we strive to foster healthy, respectful, and inclusive work environments.

CSC remains committed to improving mental health and wellness within our organization. It is committed to empowering employees to affect meaningful change for themselves, their colleagues, and our shared workplaces. As we forge a path towards a better understanding of workplace wellness, we see the value of interpersonal relationships in this. They play a key role in supporting healthy individuals and teams. Thank you to everyone who focuses on relationships as a part of their own personal wellness mandate. You are contributing to making CSC's work environment a better one. Your professionalism and compassion do not go unnoticed, and your efforts have a meaningful impact every day.
