Are Risks to Your Collection Keeping You Awake at Night?
Caring for artifacts and collections can be a challenge when resources shrink as demand for access grows. In addition to trying to provide appropriate exhibition and storage facilities for collections, heritage professionals today face new dilemmas:
- Should we exhibit artifacts in non-museum spaces?
- Is it safe to hold a large event in a particular gallery?
- How does one address unstable modern materials or contemporary art collections?
- Which preservation improvement should we implement if we can only afford one?
This workshop will teach heritage professionals how to use risk management techniques to make decisions regarding care of collections on display and in storage. Topics covered include:
- What is risk management and risk-based decision making?
- How is it applied to collections in museums, galleries, archives and historic house museums?
- How does collection value affect risk-based decisions?
- How is cost-benefit analysis used in risk-based decision making?
- What patterns have emerged from the comprehensive risk assessments done by CCI for Canadian institutions? What risks are universal, what risks are local?
- How can I apply risk management techniques to difficult decisions about increased use of and public access to collections?
Who Is It For?
Conservators, collection managers, registrars, facility managers and generalists in small museums.
The workshop will be delivered in English, but some information will be made available in French.
Two Workshop Options
: A one-day introduction to the main ideas and some case studies. Provided in person and at a distance via livestream (limited to 50 participants in each format).
-: A four-day course consisting of the one-day introduction plus a three-day interactive workshop (limited to 22 participants). The workshop will apply the ideas introduced on the first day to individual decisions that affect collections, especially those that look “risky,” through practical exercises, group work and mentoring. Practical sessions will address risks identified during CCI’s client survey of 2013 as well as those identified by participants prior to the course.

One-day Introduction
Number of Participants
A maximum of 50 registrations for in person attendance and 50 registrations for distance livestream attendance will be accepted. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens.

The selection will be based on the following criteria:
- likelihood that participants can use the course knowledge to influence good care for Canadian collections
- ability to share and transfer the knowledge gained during the course to a wider audience
- professional experience and training
- number of registrations from a single organization
- citizenship (preference will be given to Canadians)
If the maximum number of participants is met, a waiting list will be established.
Payment
Payment for the four-day workshop will be expected upon confirmation of acceptance into the course. It must be provided in Canadian funds by credit card (American Express, MasterCard or VISA).

Additional Information
Refunds
Requests to withdraw must be submitted in writing to CCI. Refunds will be issued according to the following schedule:
- a full refund less a $25 administrative fee for requests received at least 21 days prior to the start of the workshop
- a full refund less a $50 administrative fee for requests received between 20 and 7 days prior to the start of the workshop
- no refund for requests received less than 7 days prior to the start of the workshop
Exceptions to this refund policy may be made in the event of insurmountable difficulties in attending the workshop.
Cancellation
CCI reserves the right to cancel this workshop and/or livestream access if the minimum enrolment requirement is not met 30 days prior to the event. In such cases, CCI will refund the full registration fee, but will not be responsible for any transportation, housing, loss of income or other costs that may have been incurred by the participants.
