Heritage places

The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) is a centre of conservation and scientific expertise. CCI provides preservation, rehabilitation and restoration services to custodians of publicly accessible Canadian heritage places, such as buildings and their architectural components and decorative treatments.

CCI also has a mandate to investigate the nature of heritage materials and the processes of deterioration of heritage collections. This involves investigation and research into:

  • the nature and identity of heritage materials;
  • the technology and mechanisms of deterioration of heritage materials; and
  • the causes of instability in building structures that have an impact on heritage art, objects and finishes.

Preserving Canada’s heritage places

CCI is currently part of a team engaged in significant national projects, including the conservation of buildings in Canada’s Parliamentary Precinct. CCI contributes to the preservation of key character-defining elements found at these important sites, along with their heritage collections and interiors.

CCI’s involvement in the rehabilitation of the East Block, the West Block, the adjacent Wellington Building (including the lobby mosaic), the Centre Block and the Sir John A. Macdonald Building (the former Bank of Montreal Building), includes:

  • investigations, surveys, and technical analyses of original materials in primary heritage interior places;
  • risk assessment, packing and transport as well as project management during major capital construction; and
  • conservation treatment investigations for significant collections, as well as planned interventions for heritage rooms in the Center Block.
