Statement by Minister Joly on Easter

Statements

OTTAWA, April 18, 2017

This weekend, millions of Canadians will gather together with friends and family to celebrate Easter. This holiday commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter, which is based on the Gregorian calendar, is one of the most sacred holidays for Canadians of the Christian faith.

This year is special as this weekend also marks Orthodox Easter, which is based on the Julian calendar. Also known as Pascha, this sacred day is celebrated by Christians of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholic faiths.

For Christians of both Eastern and Western churches, Easter represents a time to reflect on the notions of personal sacrifice and compassion and to celebrate our love for one another.

Let us use this occasion to remember those in need and to find ways to extend a helping hand.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I wish a wonderful holiday to all Canadians celebrating Easter.
