Ice Sculpture: The Beaver in the Abenaki Culture

Description

This ice sculpture by carvers Ryan Hill and Mowafak Nema pays homage to the First Nations people. For the Abenaki people, the beaver holds significant cultural, spiritual, and practical importance. They have long revered the beaver for its industrious nature and its role in shaping the environment. The beaver's role as a builder also symbolizes the importance of construction, planning, and foresight—values that are highly respected in Abenaki culture. This sculpture is inspired by the work of Jessica Somers, Abenaki First Nation from Odanak. Her work can be found in the Indigenous marketplace at Madahoki Farm.
