Amira Elghawaby: My name’s Amira Elghawaby, and I’m Canada's first ever Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia.

Now you might wonder, what does Islamophobia mean? It covers racism, stereotypes, bias, fear, acts of hostility or violence aimed at individual Muslims or followers of the Islamic faith.

Although Canada stands as one of the world's most inclusive countries, significant work is still ahead in countering Islamophobia and related forms of prejudice and discrimination.

This is where I fit in.

[Amira Elghawaby is having a discussion with several people seated around a table.]

Amira Elghawaby: As Special Representative, a large part of my responsibility is to offer advice and guidance to the Federal Government on how to address the impacts of Islamophobia and protect human rights.

[Amira Elghawaby is sitting at a table in a coffee shop, talking with a man.]

Amira Elghawaby: A second part of my mandate is to foster public awareness about the remarkable contributions of our incredibly diverse communities, who help enrich the fabric of our society every day.

Highlighting that diversity will also encourage a rethink of perceptions of Muslims and help challenge harmful stereotypes.

[Amira Elghawaby is working in front of her computer, in her office.]

[A close-up is made on books and objects in Amira Elghawaby's office.]

Amira Elghawaby: I am pleased to work with allies and champions from across governments and in communities. We’re committed to nurturing a safer, fairer, and more equitable Canada for all.
