Lake Huron drainage basin map

This map of the Lake Huron drainage basin shows a small inset showing the position of Lake Huron relative to the other Great Lakes - it is the third-most eastern Great Lake. The map, whose scale is in hundreds of kilometres and is oriented in the north direction, shows the Lake Huron drainage basin and all provinces, states, cities, Areas of Concern (AOC), and tributaries within it.

The Canadian province shown is Ontario. The United States (US) state shown is Michigan. The international border between Canada and the US cuts through the middle of the St. Marys River, part of the North Channel, and the middle of Lake Huron. Canadian cities shown (all in Ontario): Sault Ste. Marie, Thessalon, Blind River, Elliot Lake, Espanola, Greater Sudbury, North Bay, Parry Sound, Huntsville, Bracebridge, Midland, Orillia, Barrie, Collingwood, Owen Sound, Kincardine, Goderich, and Sarnia. Lake Nipissing is west of North Bay, Ontario. Georgian Bay is in the north-east section of Lake Huron on the Canadian side. Lake Simcoe is south of Orillia, Ontario. US cities shown (all in Michigan): Sault Ste. Marie, Alpena, Bay City, Midland, Saginaw, Flint, and Port Huron. Saginaw Bay is in the south-west section of Lake Huron on the US side.

US AOC shown: Saginaw River/Bay. Binational AOCs shown, which are AOCs that are shared by Canada and the US: St. Mars River, and St. Clair River. Delisted Canadian AOCs shown, which are AOCs remediated and removed from the list: Severn Sound, and Collingwood Harbour. Canadian Area in Recovery shown, which is an AOC that has been remediated but requires time and monitoring to ensure the intended environmental results are achieved: Spanish Harbour.

Also shown on the map are tributaries. A tributary is a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake. Fourteen unnamed tributaries to Lake Huron are shown along the lake’s shores; in the west/Michigan, are 2. In Ontario, 2 are located along the south-eastern shore of Lake Huron. Four are located along the eastern coast of the Georgian Bay, which is to the north-east of Lake Huron. Six more drain into the North Channel just north of Lake Huron.
