Government of Canada support helps businesses in Dartmouth increase agility, competitiveness

Innovative manufacturing and technology solutions are giving Atlantic Canadian businesses a competitive edge. The Government of Canada is investing to help seven Dartmouth-based companies innovate, modernize and become more efficient.

Exploring and seizing business opportunities

Today, Darren Fisher, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth – Cole Harbour, announced that the federal government will invest total contributions of more than $6 million dollars to help seven small and medium-sized businesses scale up and modernize their operations. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA.

The funding will help Farnell Packaging Incorporated, Ring Rescue Incorporated, Sunrise Foods Incorporated, Sunsel Systems Manufacturing Corporation, Ace Machining Limited, HFX Steel Framing Solutions Inc., and Aurea Technologies Inc. adopt technology, increase productivity and explore new markets.

  • Farnell Packaging Incorporated, with more than 200 full-time employees, offers clients in the food, personal care, horticulture and industrial sectors, a full suite of services including packaging manufacturing, product development, artwork and design, and warehousing and logistics. Farnell offers a variety of award-winning sustainable packaging solutions for fresh and frozen foods.

  • Ring Rescue Incorporated has been helping healthcare professionals address ring entrapment since 2019. Their 2022 launch of the Ring Rescue Kit spurred rapid growth and adoption by leading institutions like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Mount Sinai and others. In Nova Scotia, it is now standard in all Emergency and Urgent Care departments. 

  • Sunrise Foods Incorporated, which has more than 40 full-time employees, makes all of its products in house. Since 1995, it has expanded its market outside of Atlantic Canada and is now selling to most major retailers across Canada.

  • Sunsel Systems Manufacturing Corporation (Sunsel) is located in a state-of-the-art 74,000 square foot facility. It designs, manufactures and tests electronic components and printed circuit boards for original equipment manufacturers that provide support to various end users across many industries including healthcare, aerospace and defense, automotive, power and energy, IT and telecom, industrial and consumer electronics.  

  • Ace Machining Limited was established in March 2008 and manufactures precision parts for customers in construction, marine, fabrication, R&D and green energy fields. Throughout the COVID 19 crises, Ace Machining designed, manufactured, and sold a wide array of PPE products to the restaurant and fast food industry to help support recovery efforts while meeting local health restrictions. It has 45 staff and boasts a diverse 17-nationality workforce.

  • HFX Steel Framing Solutions Inc. manufactures and assembles prefabricated light gauge steel homes and multi-level buildings in its facility and ships them to client sites ready for installation. Prefab steel construction can be up to four times faster than conventional stick-built homes, alleviating the pressure of long lead times and speeding up the construction phase, resulting in savings that scale up with the size of the project.

  • Aurea Technologies Inc. is a female-founded startup that caters to outdoor and emergency preparedness markets with its Shine Turbine, which can rapidly store wind power to charge handheld USB device including phones, tablets, e-readers, lights, drones, cameras, and GPSes. 

  • The funding announced today is provided through ACOA’s Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program.
