Backgrounder: Preparing Newfoundland’s southwest coast for the next storm
Backgrounder
A total of $1,491,314 in non-repayable funding through the Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund is being allocated to seven climate comfort centre projects in western and southwestern Newfoundland and Labrador.
This financial support will help to plan the rebuild of or outfit / improve existing comfort centres in the Towns of Channel-Port aux Basques, Rose Blanche-Harbour Le Cou, Burnt Islands, Burgeo, Ramea and Harbour Authority of Magaree-Fox Roost. Project descriptions and amounts awarded are outlined below:

Town of Burnt Islands | St. Michael's Church basement hall has been identified as focal point / comfort centre should the town experience another climate-event or disaster. Funding will support the repairs and updates necessary to provide a safe space. | $312,100 |
Channel-Port aux Basques Lions Club | The Lions Club was instrumental in providing a safe place to gather, serve food, and acted as the hub to store and collect and distribute donations of essential products to support residents of the region. The contribution will support upgrades and repairs, including electrical, kitchen improvements, accessibility, and installation of heat pumps. | $302,050 |
Town of Burgeo | The community hall is the designated climate comfort centre. Funding will support upgrades and equipment to enable the facility to house residents of the region should the town experience another climate-event or disaster to provide a safe space. | $200,000 |
Town of Rose Blanche-Harbour Le Cou | Funding will help repair the church hall basement (designated climate comfort centre) and address damage directly resulting from Hurricane Fiona. | $100,000 |
Town of Ramea | The Town of Ramea has identified the need to have a fully equipped comfort centre with essential equipment and supplies and is prepared to upgrade the centre. | $72,164 |
Harbour Authority of Margaree-Fox Roost | Funding will support the acquisition of specialized equipment to improve the readiness of the local climate comfort centre, including building renovations, affected by Hurricane Fiona. | $55,000 |
