COVID-19 has created unprecedented challenges for the tourism industry. The Government of Canada is working to create new opportunities for communities, businesses and operators to ensure the sector emerges from the pandemic in as strong a position as possible. The Town of Lunenburg is a top visitor destination in Nova Scotia and home of the famed Bluenose schooner, which is why the Government of Canada is supporting events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the legendary ship’s launch.

Quotes

“Famous for her racing exploits and immortalized on the back of our dime, the legendary Bluenose has been the pride of Nova Scotia for a 100 years. As the Member of Parliament for Lunenburg, and a resident of the South Shore, I am so proud to see our government supporting the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society and the important work they do to keep our maritime history and culture alive today. I can’t wait to join our community members in the coming months as we honour this iconic ship’s 100th anniversary and help position Nova Scotia as a destination of choice, ready to welcome visitors again when the time is right.”

“By showcasing Lunenburg’s rich maritime heritage and the talents of hundreds of local artists, the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society will highlight the great impact of the Bluenose on our Canadian identity. The Government of Canada is proud to support the commemoration of the Bluenose centennial and allow Canadians from coast to coast to coast to join these great celebrations.”
- The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage

“For 100 years, Bluenose has been a symbol of community and pride for our province. As we celebrate this monumental anniversary of Bluenose’s reign, we’re also celebrating our Nova Scotian identity – our connection to the sea, innovative spirit and determination to succeed.”
The Honourable Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, Nova Scotia Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage

“When Bluenose was built 100 years ago, she showcased the best of Lunenburg’s seafaring economy in shipbuilding and the fishery. Bluenose’s success in the racing world – just after World War I and a deadly flu pandemic – gave a much-needed boost of morale, pride and community to us all. We are grateful for the recognition and support of her inspiring legacy.”
Matt Risser, Mayor, Town of Lunenburg

“One hundred years ago, on the heels of the last global pandemic, Bluenose became a symbol of hard work, resilience and success, inspiring immense pride within our young nation. Bluenose 100 aims to share the inspiring story of Bluenose with a new generation, delving into the culture and heritage the famed schooner represents.”
- Alan Creaser, Chair – Bluenose 100 Committee
