Celebrating L.M. Montgomery’s Legacy in PEI

News release

Governments support development of new tourism infrastructure and marketing

January 23, 2019 – Cavendish, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

L.M. Montgomery is recognized as one of the great authors of the 20th century. Her most famous creation, Anne of Green Gables, and her descriptions of Prince Edward Island’s natural beauty bring thousands of visitors from around the world each year. By investing in new products, strategically strengthening and building on tourism experiences, and harnessing online community-driven marketing potential, L.M. Montgomery’s literary contributions can continue to grow.

To this end, the Resort Municipality of Stanley Bridge, Hope River, Bayview, Cavendish and North Rustico (Resort Municipality) is creating a commemorative park, complete with a statue and a literary trail that will connect and lead visitors to L.M. Montgomery experiences. That is why the Government of Canada and the Province of Prince Edward Island are providing over $600,000 to the Resort Municipality for the tourism infrastructure and its innovative approach to collaboration and marketing.

The Honourable Wayne Easter, Member of Parliament for Malpeque, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with the Honourable Chris Palmer, PEI Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, joined members of the Resort Municipality to make the announcement today.

The Government of Canada is making smart investments that will create good, middle-class jobs in our country. It is helping Atlantic Canadian communities access the tools they need to create sustainable economic growth. Support for this project is one way the Government of Canada is working to achieve its Atlantic Growth Strategy outcome of long-term economic prosperity in the region.
