Increasing Cape Breton’s Tourism Draw

News Release

Government of Canada supports tourism growth on Cape Breton Island

July 25, 2017 – Louisbourg, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Tourism businesses across the country are a major source of employment, particularly for workers under 35 years of age who occupy 51% of jobs in tourism industries. Many are the economic life-blood of the communities in which they exist, creating jobs and purchasing local products and services. As part of the Atlantic Growth Strategy, the Government of Canada is committed to making strategic investments in the region’s growing tourism sector to increase visitation and employment numbers.

In 2016, Cape Breton saw a 15% increase in room nights sold over the previous year. Destination Cape Breton Association (DCBA) aims to see tourism spending grow on Cape Breton Island, thanks in part to a $1.92M Government of Canada contribution aimed at supporting the implementation of the organization’s 2017-2019 Strategic Plan.

Rodger Cuzner, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, was in Louisbourg today to share details of the government’s contribution on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The plan seeks to reinforce Cape Breton Island as a premium tourism destination by showcasing the Island’s greatest assets, both nationally and internationally. This project will result in increases to room nights sold, visitor spending, and length of stay. It will also add to the number of travelers seeking unique local experiences such as whale watching, ziplining, or farm-to-fork dining.

Tourism Nova Scotia, through its industry partnership programs, is co-investing with DCBA in digital marketing and content development to promote Cape Breton in markets outside Atlantic Canada. The Island’s five municipalities are also supporting the implementation of DCBA’s strategic plan.
