October 15, 2021
Reading Time: Varies
From AOC 32 to AOC 38 students were required to research and write a case study. There were two broad categories they could pick from, Leadership and Battles. There were seven topics to pick from under each category as follows:
Leadership Battles
Arthur Currie Hill 70
Guy Simonds D+1
Bernard Montgomery Second Lebanon War
George Patton Grozny
Erwin Rommel Operation Medusa
Jacques Dextraze Fallujah
E.L.M. Burns Kap’Yong
Students were required to select two questions from a list of questions provided within their chosen case study and prepare their papers after examining primary and secondary sources provided to them augmented by their own additional research. They were expected to prepare a well-written and well-argued 10-page paper with a clear thesis. The best papers from each category were awarded The LGen Peter J. Devlin Award for Leadership Studies and The Michael K. Jeffries Award for Battle Studies. We are pleased to provide these case studies for Unit PME.
Battle Series #1 - The Battle of Hill 70 and Lens
The Battle of Hill 70 from 15-18 August 1917 was an important victory for the Canadian Corps in the First World War. The battle was Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Currie’s first battle as commander of the Canadian Corps.
Battle Series #4 - The Battle of Kap'Yong
In April 1951, the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) was part of the 27th British Infantry Brigade (BIB), itself under the direct command of U.S. IX Corps. At that time the corps was involved in Operation DAUNTLESS, the drive to Phase Line Wyoming north of the 38th Parallel.
