Major-General Boivin was posted to 12e Régiment blindé du Canada, upon completion of his occupational training as an armoured officer. His regimental employment covered a variety of staff appointments at the unit and he has commanded at all levels within the unit, culminating with the command of 12e Régiment blindé du Canada from 2011 to 2013. Between June 2017 and February 2019, he was the Commander of 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Valcartier. Between June 2021 and June 2023, he was Commander 2nd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force–East and from June 2023 to July 2024, he served as Director-General Military Personnel Strategic. He was appointed Deputy Commander of the Canadian Army in July 2024.

His extra-regimental employment includes several staff positions to include Commander Canadian Armed Forces Joint Counter-Explosive Threat Task Force (CAF JCET TF), special advisor to the Canadian Army Commander and Deputy Commanding General - Operations I Corps (US).

He participated in four operational deployments. He deployed twice to the former Yugoslavia, in Afghanistan as part of Task Force 1-08, and in Egypt on OP CALUMET.

He has obtained his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University du Québec à Montréal, two master's degree from the Royal Military College and a master's degree from Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. He completed the Land Force Technical Staff Program, the Land Force Command and Staff Course, the Joint Command and Staff Program at the Canadian Armed Forces College, and the Defence and Strategic Studies Course, Canberra, Australia.

Major-General Boivin is from Lachenaie, Québec. He is married and they are the proud parents of three young adults.
