Foreign Affairs Minister to attend Lima Group meeting in Guatemala

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced she will attend a meeting of Lima Group members in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on Thursday, June 6, 2019, as the crisis in Venezuela continues to deepen.

This follows the participation by the Minister in the joint meeting of representatives of the Lima Group and the International Contact Group that was held today in New York City.

Lima Group members will meet in Guatemala to review the ongoing threats against members of Venezuela’s democratic National Assembly as well as to coordinate how international partners work together to support the Venezuelan people in their struggle for a peaceful transition to democracy.

  • Over 4 million Venezuelans have been forced to flee their homes since 2015 in search of food, health care and other basic services.

  • The Lima Group was established on August 8, 2017, in Lima, Peru, to coordinate participating countries’ efforts and apply international pressure on the Maduro regime.

  • The Lima Group, which now includes the interim government of Venezuela, is committed to supporting the efforts of the Venezuelan people to restore constitutional democracy in their country.
