You must submit a SIN application and provide all required documents to:

  • request a SIN for the first time
  • obtain a confirmation of your existing SIN
  • correct an error on a SIN record
  • update a legal change of name
  • update your status on your SIN record
  • update the expiry date of your immigration document on your SIN record
  • remove your disc number from your SIN record

The easiest way to apply, update or obtain a SIN confirmation is to apply online. If everything is in order, your SIN application will be processed within 5 business days.

You must wait 10 business days after it is submitted online before checking the status of the request.

If you provided your email address on your online application, you will receive 2 emails:

  • one confirming your application has been received
  • a second when your application has been processed

If your application does not meet the requirements, your second email will indicate what is required to reapply.

If it has been more than 10 days since you applied online, please consult the information below:

If you provided your email address, you will receive an email confirming your application has been received and a second email when your application has been processed.

If your application did not meet the requirements, you will receive an email or letter indicating that the application was rejected, as well as what is required to obtain a SIN.

If you choose to receive your SIN:

  • digitally and are eligible by signing in or registering for My Service Canada Account (MSCA) your SIN will be available to view as soon as your SIN application is processed. You will not receive your SIN confirmation letter by mail.
  • by mail or you received an email indicating that you are not eligible to receive your SIN digitally, you will receive your SIN confirmation letter by mail.

You can view your Social Insurance Number (SIN) in My Service Canada Account (MSCA). Once registered or signed in to MSCA, you will be able to view your:

  • SIN
  • names as they appear on the SIN record
  • SIN expiry date (if applicable)

I am an employer and I need to confirm my employee’s SIN

As an employer, learn about your responsibilities related to your employees' SINs.

Your employee can view their SIN on My Service Canada Account (MSCA). For information on eligibility and how they can access their SIN visit My Service Canada Account.

Employers looking to confirm the SIN of a current or former employee must contact us by phone. You will need to provide your business number issued by Canada Revenue Agency, along with necessary information to verify the identity of your company and the employee.
