Defence Intelligence Officer Recruitment Program
The Defence Intelligence Officer Recruitment Program (DIORP) is a three-year development program that prepares its participants for a challenging and rewarding career in the field of defence intelligence.
During the program, candidates learn new skills and develop their talents to become qualified defence intelligence officers.
What does a defence intelligence officer do?
Defence intelligence officers provide intelligence analysis and intelligence related policy advice to the Government of Canada (GoC) and the Department of National Defence (DND).
Our intelligence officers:
- assess foreign political, military, scientific and technical information;
- provide credible, reliable, integrated and sustained intelligence services and products to GoC, DND and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in support of decision making and military operations;
- are responsive across the intelligence spectrum from tactical to strategic;
- contribute to intelligence-sharing relationships with Allied and partner countries;
- develop/coordinate defence intelligence policy;
- interpret client needs and set priorities for collection and analysis; and
- identify information and intelligence gaps and work with key partners in Canada and abroad to fill them.
Related services and information
Most of our employees work at the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario while others work in buildings around the National Capital Region. Our intelligence officers often get the chance to travel across Canada and abroad on regular and special work assignments.
How the DIORP works
If accepted, you will enter the program at the EC-02 level (Economics and Social Science Services Group). Over the course of three years, you will be trained through a combination of on-the-job experiences and in-house learning opportunities. Upon successful completion of the program, you will graduate at the EC-05 level.

Essential qualifications
To be considered for the DIORP, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
- have a Master’s degree from a recognized university; and
- be fluent in English or French.
You must also demonstrate the following competencies:
- Integrity and respect;
- Thinking things through;
- Working effectively with others;
- Showing initiative and being action-oriented;
- Judgement; and
- Communication (Written and Oral).
How to apply
The link to the DIORP competition will be posted here when launched. Applicants will have approximately two weeks in which to apply online. The process will consist of a screening (the online application), followed by a written exam/s, and culminate in an interview. Successful candidates will be grouped into a pool of qualified individuals from which some (based on requirements) will be appointed to the DIORP.
