News release

September 28, 2018 — St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs, on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced today the official opening of the Newfoundland and Labrador Satellite Office of the Atlantic regional office of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) in St. John’s.

The opening of the Newfoundland and Labrador Satellite Office will allow for an increased presence of the Agency in the region for the conduct of federal environmental assessments in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore area.

The satellite office will lead the process for the Regional Assessment of Offshore Oil and Gas Exploratory Drilling East of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Agency and the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) are inviting comments from the public and Indigenous groups on the draft Agreement to Conduct a Regional Assessment until October 12, 2018.

The office will support federal environmental assessments that are currently underway, such as the Bay du Nord Development Project, as well as future proposed projects in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore, helping grow our economy while protecting our environment.

Quotes

"An office in St. John’s means that decisions surrounding Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore will be made where they should be: right here at home. Our Government will work alongside the province and the C-NLOPB to contribute expertise and play a key role in offshore developments. We know that the environment and economy go hand in hand and this office will play an important role in making sure a clean environment co-exists with a strong economy."

— The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs
